Lists

Do I need to save the list after making changes?

There is no need to save the list after you’re done creating and modifying it.

Changes are saved automatically, and will reflect on any devices your lists are synced with.

How can I delete a list?

There are two ways to delete a list:

1. Tap the three lines menu, then long-press on the name of the desired list and choose Delete from the sub-menu.

2. Open the list you wish to delete, tap the name of the list at the top of the screen and select Delete from the sub-menu.

How do I change the background/ use a photo from gallery?

If you want to customize the look of your app, you can do so from the Settings menu. 
Simply go to Settings – Background and either:

tap on “Select colour” to choose a solid background

tap on “Select a picture” to use one from your phone Gallery (you might be asked for permissions if you haven’t given one up to this point). Please note that the app automatically rotates pictures in portrait mode, so make sure the photo you use is already in portrait!

tap on “Download old backgrounds” if you are nostalgic for the one you had in a previous version of the app. Which is totally understandable, we had some very suitable ones 😉

How do I create a recipe?

To create a recipe from scratch, please go to the 3 dots menu and tap “Recipes”. Then tap the ‘+’ icon at the top of the screen. You will be asked to provide a name for your newly created recipe.

After you have created the recipe, you can click on it and add some ingredients (plus button/mic button at the top).

You can also create a recipe from a list of ingredients you found online. For this, you should use the Text import feature. Please take the following steps:

Select the ingredients list from a text recipe

Select “Share”, Share into the shopping app. Alternatively, you can copy the text and then open the import dialog (3 dots menu — Text import) and paste into the text field

Select the separator (default “new line”)

Select “Recipe” at the bottom

Press the “Text import” button

Select the name of the recipe you would like to add the ingredients to. In this step, you can add the ingredients to a pre-existing recipe or create a new one.

How to create a list from an existing one?

Say you could really reuse an old list…but with a new twist 🙂

You can use any list as a template for a new one. Simply go to the 3 lines menu and press “New list”. From the sub-menu, select “Create from existing lists”. Check the preferred list and press “New list”. Choose a name for your new list, and you’re good to go. …Shopping, that is 😉


Items

Adding items to the list

If you want to add items to the list there are three ways you can achieve that:

Tap the + sign at the top of the screen and simply write down your items. Write down several items separated by ‘Enter’ on your keyboard to add multiple items at once.

Tap the microphone icon and dictate your items. Under Settings, set the value of the Separator to AND so that you are able to enter several items at once: say “Milk and toast and honey”.

Tap the Barcodes icon at the top of the screen and scan the barcode on the desired items. Only adds individual items.

Can I add a new item directly into a category?

Yes, definitely! 😊 Simply tap the category heading and speak your item while the mic shows on screen.

If you do not wish to use voice input (we totally get it if you don’t), you can go to Settings – Categories – Input mode for click on category. You can then select “Manually”, if you wish to add your items by typing them. 
If you choose “Nothing”, then tapping the name of the category does not prompt any action.

 

If, by any chance, your item already exists on the list, you will get a short on-screen notification.

Can I add multiple items to my list?

To add multiple items to your list, you can speak your items linked by the word ‘and’ to have them added as separate entries to the list. Milk and toast and honey, ta-daaa! 😉

Can I edit a price once I’ve set it?

Sure! Who doesn’t love special offers?! So just go to that desired item, tap the price field next to it and make the necessary adjustments. If you wish to keep your significant shopping partner updated on the new offers simply head on to the FAQ section detailing the Synchronization of lists and make sure you are on the same page. Literally 😊

Can I edit a quantity once I’ve set it?

OK, all those slow cart pushers in aisle 5 just made us realize it’s going to be a long day. This asks for extra supplies, so why not make that 2 bars of chocolate instead of 1? Chocolate doesn’t ask questions, chocolate understands… 😉

We’ve got you covered: to edit quantities for the items on your list, just tap on the quantity field below your item to make necessary adjustments.

Can I see how much my shopping will amount to?

So, there you are, sitting peacefully one afternoon, shopping leaflet in hand, adding away whatever strikes your fancy. Now you don’t have to be afraid you’ll break the bank, simply check how much your list amounts to so far. 

You can consult your cost overview by tapping the name of the list at the top of the screen and then tap on Cost overview in the sub-menu. You have the option to see detailed costs by item, or by category. A total cost is also showing next to the name of your list in the side Menu (three lines menu, top left of screen). 

Try to swivel the colored pie charts for better visibility.  

What if I’m too busy browsing leaflets? No worries, we’ve got you busy bees covered. Head down to the FAQ section introducing Barcodes. 

Did I just see Barcodes?! What does that do?

If you’re going on a shopping spree and rush to add items to your list on your way to the car (we don’t judge, it happens), here’s a practical way to mark your items faster.  

 

Tap on the barcode icon at the top of the screen. Scan the barcode on the desired item and see it magically added to the list.

Well, when I say magically… First, you will be asked to give a name to your newly added item. Then the item by that name will be added to the list. Next time you scan the same barcode, the item will be added to the list automatically.

If the magic fails to happen, make sure you’ve taken care of the behind-the-scenes: Settings – Barcodes and make sure everything is ‘activated’.

How do I delete an item? Or anything else, for that matter…

First, swipe!

To delete an item, you swipe right. Right, not left, we’re not on Tinder anymore 😊

To delete a category, you swipe right. You are given an option to also remove the items in the category as well, in which case press OK. If you wish to keep the items and only remove the category heading, please tap Cancel. 

For the more conservative of us, there’s still the classic Trash button. To enable the Trash button, please go to Settings – Item – Show button to delete. 

For fun and variation, you can also tap and hold items and select Delete from the sub-menu. 

If you need to bulk delete items, you can enable this feature from Settings – Item – Checkboxes to delete. Once you check multiple items, a Trash bin appears at the top of the screen and there they go down the trash chute. 

If you feel remorseful, you can bring them back, however. Check the FAQ section detailing the newly introduced Undo function

How do I delete/ rename/ edit a category/ item?

If you wish to delete, rename or edit a category/ item you have to long press on the desired entry. An additional Menu will appear on screen. Simply select the desired option from the list.

How do I enter multiple items at once?

To enter multiple items at once, you should go to the 3 lines menu (top left) and select Settings – Speech recognition – Separator. Write AND as your separator value and press OK. Restart the app and speak your items: for example ‘bread AND milk AND honey’. The respective items will show as three separate entries.

How do I sort items?

To keep new items at the end/beginning of the list: Settings — List — Insert new item at the end of the list (toggle it on/off, depending on your preference).

You can then re-arrange items by drag & drop. Simply hold the = symbol next to the item you would like to move and drag it to the desired position.

If you’d rather have your items listed alphabetically, you can, of course, opt for the automatic alphabetical sorting: Settings — List — Keep order always alphabetically.

If you wish to move the already bought items out of the way so you can focus on what you need to buy, go to Settings — List — Crossed off to the end of the list. Don’t worry, when you tap these items again to reactivate, they will resume their original spot on your list.

How to change quantity type?

To prevent the accidental addition of 2 pieces of sugar to your list, when you obviously meant 2 KILOS, you can set the quantity type (default is piece) by pressing the + button and inputting your own description on the new ‘Create new type’ screen. 

To switch between types easily, you just have to tap on the ‘Quantity type’ field and you are presented with a list of the previously entered types from which you can select the appropriate option.

Press OK when you are happy with the changes.

How to restore a deleted item?

To restore a deleted item, please go to the three dots menu and tap “My Items”. Search for your item and then check the box next to its name. Tap on “Add to the list” at the bottom of the screen. Your item will be added to the list that is currently open.

To restore multiple items at once, you have to check the checkbox next to several items and then tap “Add to the list”.

I had an item here somewhere… – enter My Items!

If you remember having added an item on the list, sometimes this life, but you cannot seem to find it – it’s most probably long deleted, anyway – you can go to My Items (three dots menu, top right of screen) and reuse it from the list. 

 

“My Items” is pretty much a history of every item you’ve ever added to your lists. In case you wish to redeem an item from this list, you can do so by checking the checkbox next to it and then tapping “Add to the list” down the bottom of the screen. You can also do this for multiple items at once, just check multiple checkboxes. 

 

You get a chance to edit the item before adding it (or update the details on a very old entry, such as price and quantity): tap and hold the item then do all necessary changes. You can even assign it a barcode, for future reference and speedier use (check this FAQ on Barcodes for details on how to make the most of it) 😊

Oops! … Can I Undo?

You have the option to undo an accidental deletion. Simply press Undo at the bottom of the screen to revert. You can adjust the Undo options under Settings – List – Enable Undo function (it activates the Undo action) or Time to Undo (it sets the number of seconds the Undo button remains on screen after you have deleted something). 

If you failed to tap Undo, you can still retrieve your deleted items from My items (three dots menu top right of the screen – My items tab).

Categories

How to organize categories?

As you slide more items into the category, you can see a line forming that shows the extent of the respective category. To increase visibility, you can also enable “Change the background color of the items” and “Show horizontal bar over category” from Settings — Categories.

You can assign an item to a new category by dragging & dropping it into the new category, and remove it from the category by dragging & dropping it outside of the category. 

To collapse/ expand the category contents, tap on the visibility button (the ‘^’ sign at the left of the category name). In case the visibility button is not enabled, go to Settings — Categories — Show visibility button. Ta-daaa! No distractions on your way to the store if you only planned to buy that extra loaf of bread (and no ice-cream – but why would you even?!). 

Also, if you wish to expand/ collapse all categories at once, as a bulk action, go to the three dots menu, tap on Categories, and then select ‘All fold up’ or ‘All unfold’ from the sub-menu. 

How to use categories?

Hard to focus with so many items on your list? Better deal with them one at a time. Categories to the rescue!

You can use categories to group specific items. Tap the three dots menu (top right of the screen) and tap Categories.  Choose ‘New category’ and give it a name – naming it something relevant, like ‘stuff’, will always do 🙂 

You can even choose a color for your category heading, just to differentiate it from your other stuff. Tap Save category as confidently as you can. 

A new category has now been created at the bottom of your list. If there are already items on your list, please drag & drop the relevant items under the new category heading, by holding down the two parallel lines next to the item (the = symbol). Alternatively, as variation is the spice of life, you can move the category up over the desired items.


Synchronization

How to synchronize

To have the contents of your lists stored on a server for convenient sharing, you have to register with an account. 

We are not a curious bunch, so the lists are account-dependent and protected by passwords (to which we do not have access, so if you lose the password you can create a new one, which will be sent to you on the email address you registered with – simply tap Reset password). 

 

On the first device: 

Go to the three dots menu top right of screen and open the Synchronization tab. Tap ‘Create account’ at the bottom of the screen.

Input your email address (note that we only use your email address for the purpose of password recovery). Set a new password and confirm it. 

And for those with big concerns regarding privacy in the online, you can also use a fake email. Keep in mind that there’ll be no resetting the password in case you forget it. Not to jinx it, but… “We told you so”! 😉

Confirm you have read the Privacy policy and that you agree with it. Tap ‘Create account’. 

Under ‘Releasing a list’, tap on the list name to select the list you wish to release to another device, then tap Release. 

The list now appears below, with the status ‘Online’. You can change the status of a list or delete it at any time. Please note that when a list is set to ‘Offline’ and then ‘Online’ again, the existing local lists will be overwritten by the online list. This is to say that any changes that have been made to the lists while they were in Offline mode will be permanently lost! WE CAN’T HELP YOU THERE, HONEST!

Please note that when you choose to delete an online list, by tapping on the Trash can, it only means Synchronization is terminated across all devices. Local lists will not be lost. Releasing the list again after this step will not overwrite the local lists already on the devices. 

 

On any subsequent devices: 

 

Type in the email address corresponding to the account you used to register on the first device, and the password associated with it. 

Under ‘Online lists’, make sure you set the slider bar to Online. Now the two lists are in sync, and they will reflect any changes made to them by either party, in real time. 

You can see the lists that are currently synced under the three lines menu (top left of the screen). They are marked by a blue cloud outline. 

We know how life-saving lists can be, so to prevent any accidental overwrite and subsequent loss of data, we strongly recommended you not to toggle between offline/ online once the lists are in sync. 


Miscellaneous

Does the app run on WiFi or does it operate offline?

The app only needs a data connection if you have activated the Syncing of your lists to other devices. All other operations can be done offline.

How can I retrieve my data after factory reset?

All the data in the app is saved on your phone. This means that a factory reset makes the data impossible to retrieve!

To prevent this, make sure you back-up your lists or store the data someplace safe. To perform a successful back-up, please press How can I export/ back-up data?

How do I create a recipe?

How do I transfer data via PC?

If you wish to transfer your data from one device to another, you can export the data via your PC.

How to transfer my lists from the free to the paid version?

After you install the paid version, you will notice there are now 2 different apps on your phone. To transfer all your lists and settings from the free version to the PRO version, you can use the Import / Export tool:

1. In the free app, go to Settings — Backup and tap Export.
2. Then open your PRO app and go to Settings — Backup and tap Import.

After you check the transfer really worked, you can delete the free version.

I purchased the paid version but had to uninstall. Can I download it again free of charge?

Payment information is account dependent. You can re-install the Pro version you have previously bought without paying for it again if you simply make sure you do so from the same user account you purchased it from.

Open the Play Store app on your Android device. Check that you are connected with the same account that you used to make the purchase from. Open the hamburger menu (the three stacked lines at the top left of your screen) and tap “My apps & games”. Tap on “Library” and then look for the “Shopping list voice input PRO” app and tap on the “Install” button next to it.

Is the app available for iOS?

For the time being, the app is only available to Android users. We are sorry for any inconveniences.


Troubleshooting

The app uses too much battery…

There’s nothing more convenient than saying good bye to those little scribbled shopping lists. Keeping your eyes on an e-list open on your phone is so much better. But maybe you are at the end of a long day. You probably wouldn’t want your phone to die on you, right? If your display stays active for as long as the app is open, then you might notice it drains your battery rather quickly. To prevent this from happening, simply go to the 3 lines menu – Settings – Display. Make sure you un-check the ‘Display stays active when the app is running’.

Voice recognition has become slow and inaccurate

Please check first if the default voice recognition is set to Google in the Android settings of your device (Android Settings — Language & Input — Language input).
Then activate the system default voice input from the settings menu of the Shopping list app: Settings — Speech recognition — Enable system default voice input.

Why can’t I use the microphone? When I try to add items using the voice input I get the following message “Please install Google App”…

This message means that you must install the following Google app:
